Gotham 1.02 “Selina Kyle” Thoughts
I thought this episode was a lot better balanced than the pilot. It definitely is embracing the gritty cop show feel I was expecting.
Gordon is in an interesting quandary. Having to survive in corrupt Gotham means pretending to be just as willing to do bad things as the others and being comfortable with giving off that image but trying to do the right thing in the end. It’s clear that this fitting in will lead to clashes with the MCU at work and Montoya at home trying to make Barbara see Jim for who he is (or appears to be). I think it’s also interesting that Sarah Essen of all people is also at GCPD and running things.
But I’m more fascinated by Barbara and what role she will play on the show, she seems to be cut from the same cloth as Jim - calling the Gazette to get the word out when Jim couldn’t do it himself. I don’t recall if it was revealed in her brief talk with Renee in the pilot but what does she do?
I love the developing story of the Penguin’s survival/exodus from Gotham and his irrational bursts of a killing spree as he goes. The fisherman, one of the kids that picked him up, presumably the other after the ransom scheme fell apart. A great performance from the actor, you really feel for the character while freaked out at the same time.
For an episode titled after her, I was expecting Selina or “Cat” to have even a bigger role than she did, which was fairly substantial and key to the episode (I saw you Cory in the House! So that’s where you disappeared to, the streets of Gotham.) but you cant deny that the last line/scene was definitely taking a page out of the comics last page shocker reveal (for Gordon).
I’m glad that Bruce is a very minimal character of the show and I have no complaints with him, I think I like this casting even more than the Nolan kid but I’m still trying to get used to Alfred. When he shook Bruce briefly and scolded him for burning his hand I had flashbacks of the Goblet of Fire and Dumbledore yelling at Harry if he put his name in the goblet.

Sensation Comics Featuring Wonder Woman continues to be an excellent read. I really loved the art in issue 7 by Marguerite Sauvage, I hope she does many more issues.

Let’s continue to bury the funny chemistry between Boyle & Rosa for awkward scenes with Jake & Amy or a gag with Gina & Boyle.
